One Studio or Separate Brand and Web Specialists? How B2B Startups Should Decide

After a funding round, many B2B companies need a new brand and a new website at the same time. The positioning has sharpened, the product has grown and the old identity was made in a weekend before the seed round.

That raises a practical question: hire one studio for both, or a branding agency and a web studio separately? Both models work. They fail in different ways, and the right one depends on your situation.

We are a studio that does both, so we have a view. This guide tries to lay out the trade-offs fairly, including when we would recommend separate specialists.

Why this matters more for B2B tech companies

For a consumer brand, the identity lives on packaging, in stores, in ads and on social. For a B2B tech company, it lives mainly on the website, in the product, in sales decks and on LinkedIn. The website is where most buyers meet the brand first and where it gets used every week.

That makes the website the real test of a brand. A logo and palette that look strong in a presentation can fail on a pricing page, in a product UI frame or in a mobile navigation.

What one studio gives you

One story from positioning to launch. The people who define the positioning also write the homepage structure and design the pages. Nothing is lost in translation between a strategy deck and a sitemap.

A brand designed for screens. Colours are checked for contrast, type for small sizes, and the visual system for product UI, diagrams and data from the start, not adjusted after the fact.

Fewer handovers, faster timelines. There is one discovery, one review rhythm and one team to brief. Projects often run in parallel: brand direction is settled early and the website is built on it while details are refined.

One owner for the result. When something doesn’t work, there is no debate about whose decision caused it.

The risks: a combined studio may have less depth in specialist brand work such as naming, research-heavy strategy or large brand architecture for many products. And if the team is mainly a web shop with a logo service, the brand side will be thin. Look at the brand work, not just the websites.

What separate specialists give you

Depth where you need it. A dedicated brand agency can go further on research, naming, verbal identity and brand architecture. That matters for complex portfolios or a category-defining repositioning.

Freedom to choose the best of each. You can pick the strongest brand partner and the strongest web partner independently.

A fit for existing teams. If you have a strong in-house web or product design team, you may only need brand work from outside.

The risks: handover losses. The brand team designs for a guidelines document, the web team reinterprets it, and the brand on the live site drifts from the brand that was approved. Timelines get longer because work runs one after the other. And when the site underperforms, each side can point at the other.

When to choose which

One studio usually fits when:

  • You need a new brand and website within one fundraising or launch window.
  • The website is the main place the brand will be used.
  • You have no in-house brand or web team, or a small marketing team.
  • You want one accountable partner and one review process.

Separate specialists usually fit when:

  • The brand project is large on its own: naming, research, multiple products or sub-brands.
  • The brand has to work far beyond the website, for example hardware, packaging, retail or events.
  • An in-house team will build and run the website.
  • You already have a web partner you trust and only need brand work.

If you split the work, plan the handover

Separate specialists can work well with a few rules:

  1. Involve the web team in brand reviews, from the first direction onwards, so they can flag what won’t work on screens.
  2. Require the brand as a usable system: colour tokens with contrast-checked text colours, type scales for web, spacing, components and examples of real pages, not only a PDF.
  3. Test the brand on the hardest pages (pricing, a product page with UI, a mobile navigation) before it is signed off.
  4. Name one owner on your side who decides when the two teams disagree.

Questions to ask either option

  • Can you show brand and website work for companies at our stage and in our category?
  • Who exactly will work on our project, and are they senior?
  • How do brand decisions reach the website, and who checks them on real pages?
  • What do we get at handover: files, a design system, a CMS our team can run?
  • What happens after launch?

How we work

Allsite works as one senior team from positioning and brand to the marketing website and launch, for AI, fintech and software companies from Series A to C. Brand and website are scoped in one proposal with fixed milestones, and the brand is built as a system the website and the team can use.

See brand and creative direction, website build or request a project.

Allsite is a Berlin design and development studio for funded tech companies: positioning, brand systems and marketing websites, with one team from first workshop to launch.

Frequently asked questions

Should a startup hire one agency for branding and website?

In most cases, yes. One team avoids handover losses, designs the brand for the screens where it is used most and usually launches faster. Separate specialists fit when brand strategy is a large standalone project or you have a strong in-house web team.

What goes wrong when brand and website are done by different agencies?

The brand is designed for a guideline PDF, not for web pages. Colours fail contrast, type doesn't work at small sizes and the web team reinterprets decisions, so the brand on the site drifts from the brand that was approved.

When are separate brand and web specialists the better choice?

When you need deep brand strategy or naming work on its own, when the brand must cover packaging, retail or events far beyond the website, or when an in-house team will build the site.

Is one studio cheaper than two specialists?

Often, because there is one discovery, one review process and no rework at the handover. It depends on scope, so compare full proposals, not day rates.
